Science and Poetry

nasa_image_picture

I once wrote this review in Cordite on Tony Page’s Gateway to the Sphinx in which I explored the connections between Science and Poetry.

Many others more learned and eloquent than me have also written of the nexus between Science and The Arts. See the article by Freya Dougan-Whaite,

or the book Challenging the Divide: Approaches to Science and Poetry (Lythrum Press) by Erica Jolly. Last Tuesday I went to RiAus on Friendly Street.

We had all kinds of work on the science theme from Mike Hopkins, Simon Hanson, David Harris, Alison Flett, Steve Brock, Louise McKenna, Kahil Jureidini, Maggie Emmett, Stephen Lawrence, Erica Jolly, Ian Gibbins, John Rice, Janine Baker, performance poet Royce. My apologies to the several others I can’t remember.

I debuted my homage to Kahil Jureidini entitled String Theory Unstrung (A Faith of Particles.)
Thanks to all who came and presented (including the ones I’ve forgotten!) and thanks to the Royal Institution of Australia for continuing to encourage the Science/Poetry connection.

All nymphs deserve poems

One of my Creative Commons songs has appeared bizarrely on YouTube.  It’s the Endless Summer monologue ( and a few subtly-sung words) I used with Clarence Simpson’s beautiful guitar piece C minor. I say ‘bizarrely’ because it’s been paired with a video of the very cute and quirky ‘leaf-footed nymph’! The creator ‘Seahue’ is a nature photographer from Connecticut who specialises in vision of wildlife linked to poems and music. Thanks for using and crediting my work David.

An unusually high occurrence of rejections lately – possibly because of the high volume of poems & short stories I’ve been submitting … On the POSITIVE side, some upcoming gigs:

Max-Mo are performing this Sunday @ The Squatters Arms pub (cnr Port Rd & George Street, Thebarton) 6-8pm and we have some amazing new material!

• I’ve been awarded ‘Highly Commended’ for my chemistry haiku “carbon” in the RiAus Sci-ku 2011 competition & I’ll be reading it and collecting my award at the Where Worlds Collide presentation ceremony @ RiAus, Stock Exchange Place 20/08/11. I’ve also heard it will be “up in lights”   Congrats to all winners!

• I’ll be premiering a new poem (an homage to Kahil Jureidini) at the Friendly Street @ RiAus event Sci-odes, Sonnets and Supernovas next Tuesday night.

Fat Lady Japan

This is the other side of the Beach Blanket secret mixter. Calling Sister Midnight drew the short straw – me. She chose my reading of One Fat Lady (originally ‘octophobia’ in my phobiaphobia collection) made it grand opera and renamed it Fat Lady Japan. Grandiose.

One Fat Lady/ Octophobia
2 is fine.
Even squared.
Cubed is out of the question.
Bingo! The quaking begins.
Even one fat lady is one too many.
She begins to sing
as infinity stands
on its
head.
