It was in the late 90s that David Barnes began publishing my early poems on his Poetry DownUnder website based in Western Australia. It was a time when the Internet still seemed to be an exciting new experiment and we marveled that our work could be published instantly along side poems from all over the world. A lot of the early stuff has disappeared into the ether (although fortunately the WA Dept of Culture & The Arts, the State Library and the NLA have archived<\/a> a selection of the early PDU & Numbat pages.)
\nDavid has had a lot of illness in recent years. In an email this week he told me he was sending me a book of his poems and
\n\u201cI’m now working on a second book of selected poetry, of round about
\n100 poems Rob – working on them now as a matter of fact – keeps me alive
\nif nothing else, for as you know, poetry has been my life and still is mate.\u201d
\n\u2026 and he included two revised poems which he generously allowed me to post here:<\/p>\n

existence<\/strong><\/p>\n

destruction or happiness
\nsuch a fine line,<\/p>\n

between them \u2015<\/p>\n

all we hope
\npray for,
\nis fate to be kind:<\/p>\n

fate- destiny
\nbrings people together \u2015
\nabandoned<\/p>\n

to life\u2019s particular twists.<\/p>\n

Episodes<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was the wrong moment in time
\nto reach beyond the ambience.
\nin retrospect\u2014
\nI should have stayed in bed.<\/p>\n

the suns ray’s claw
\ntearing night’s shroud, revealing mist floating\u2014
\nabove restless grass;<\/p>\n

\u201ca gentle breeze
\nreleases it from its earthly hover.\u201d<\/p>\n

I search for you, for release
\nwhere ever you are, rise; break in to my existence
\nwaves across a desolate rock, aching
\nfor your mind-touch<\/p>\n

\u201cwith our mental images
\nanother night\u2019 with dreams\u2500 irrationality:\u201d<\/p>\n

will we meet?
\nat the next juncture, when the mist rises clear \u2500
\nwhere sails touch horizons, as twilight
\nis absorbed<\/p>\n

Setting the patterns
\nfor tonight\u2019s new visions
\nwhere ever you are\u2500 I await
\nfor you, with
\nExpectation.<\/p>\n
