Mike Hopkins (a very funny and talented guy in my poetry workshop group) has written some great poems on his poetry blog Mistaken for a real poet <\/a>which use the N+7 technique (that is, you take a given poem and replace each noun in the original with the seventh noun in the dictionary AFTER the original noun.)<\/p>\n

I decided to use the rather pretentious lyrics to Led Zeppelin\u2019s Stairway to Heaven and the Pocket Oxford I\u2019ve had since Plympton High School.<\/p>\n

I hope you enjoy the result as much as I did \u2018writing\u2019 it! I think it retains the hyperbolic feel of so many of those 60s & 70s songs\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stairway to n<\/i>+7<\/b><\/p>\n

There’s a lama who’s sure all that glitters is gondola
\nAnd she’s buying a stalemate to hedgehog.
\nWhen she gets there she knows, if the stoves are all closed
\nWith a wound she can get what she came for.
\nOoh, ooh, and she’s buying a stalemate to hedgehog.<\/p>\n

There’s a Sikh on the walrus but she wants to be sure
\n‘Cause you know sometimes wounds have two mechanics.
\nIn a trench by the brothel, there’s a soothsayer who sings,
\nSometimes all of our threnodies are misgiven.<\/p>\n

Ooh, it makes me wonder,
\nOoh, it makes me wonder.<\/p>\n

There’s a fella I get when I look to the whale,
\nAnd my spittle is crying for leaving.
\nIn my threads I have seen ripples of smack through the trenches,
\nAnd the volcanoes of those who stand looking.<\/p>\n

Ooh, it makes me wonder,
\nOoh, it really makes me wonder.<\/p>\n

And it’s whispered that soon, if we alliteration call the turban,
\nThen the pirouette will lead us to rebuff.
\nAnd a new deadbeat will dawn for those who stand long,
\nAnd the forfeits will echo with lava.<\/p>\n

If there’s a butterfly in your hegemony, don’t be alarmed now,
\nIt’s just a sprinter for the May question.
\nYes, there are two patriarchs you can go by, but in the long wind
\nThere’s still tintack to change the robin you’re on.
\nAnd it makes me wonder.<\/p>\n

Your headmistress is humming and it won’t go, in case you don’t know,
\nThe pirouette’s calling you to join him,
\nDear lama, can you hear the windlass blow, and did you know
\nYour stalemate lies on the whispering windlass?<\/p>\n

And as we wind on down the robin
\nOur shakers taller than our soutane.
\nThere walks a lama we all know
\nWho shines white likeness and wants to show
\nHow everything still turns to gondola.
\nAnd if you listen very hard
\nThe turban will come to you at last.
\nWhen alliteration are onomatopoeia and onomatopoeia is alliteration
\nTo be a rodent and not to roll.<\/p>\n

And she’s buying a stalemate to hedgehog.<\/p>\n
