I was in Sa Pa (mountains of northern Vietnam) two days ago when I had \u00a0emails from Maggie Emmett of Friendly Street & Julie Walker of RiAus<\/a> to say that my poem Moths and butterflies<\/a><\/em> had been chosen as a finalist in the RiAus Science Poetry Competition and featured as FS Poem of the Month for November<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Strangely, the day before we’d been on a hike to the Black Hmong village of Cat Cat where we’d seen \u00a0multitudes of unfamiliar butterflies…<\/p>\n

The poem first appeared in my collection micromacro<\/em><\/strong> in 2006.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Moths and Butterflies<\/strong><\/p>\n

moths<\/p>\n

go about their work<\/p>\n

stoically in grey suits<\/p>\n

or grimy blue overalls<\/p>\n

pollinating flowers<\/p>\n

feed birds and frogs<\/p>\n

need fur coats for warmth<\/p>\n

working the graveyard shift<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Butterflies are showy socialites<\/p>\n

sipping nectar at<\/p>\n

A-list cocktail parties<\/p>\n

All show, no substance,<\/p>\n

superficial in their beauty<\/p>\n

mwah-mwahing insincere air kisses<\/p>\n

to the Beautiful Pupae.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Moths are the working class<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

waiting for the revolution.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
